One week before the 2013 MMMM!
29 Jan
The 2013 Muller Monthly Music Meta is one week away! The first puzzle will be ready Tuesday February 5th, and new puzzles will be available the first Tuesday of each month. Once again, we will start out on the easier side and then grow in difficulty throughout the year.
The final “mega-meta” puzzle will be released close to midnight on Tuesday December 31st. Like last year, you should keep the prior puzzles around to help with the mega-meta.
New this year: Solvers will be able to guess the mega-meta at any time. It will be almost impossible to guess after the first few puzzles, but it will start getting conceivable after that. I only expect a handful of people to get the mega-meta before seeing the instructions in the final puzzle, but I’ve been wrong before!
I will once again be offering a free entry into the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament as a grand prize. If you can’t make the tournament, you can opt to receive $100 cash instead. In addition, one randomly chosen solver each month will get a large MMMM coffee mug. Full contest scoring details are available here.
Last year’s puzzles and results are available here. Thanks to all who participated! I’ve added the ability for solvers to post comments on this page. Let me hear from you. How did you like this year Any trash talk for the four solvers who got last year’s mega-meta Love and appreciation for your constructor (in lieu of a tip jar)?….
See you in a week!

Looking forward to the next contest – loved the first one up until the last killer, though at least I was in good company in missing it!
Point of clarification:
Rules say “Each solver will get one free guess at the mega-meta. Additional guesses are permitted, but incorrect ones will each incur one point penalties.”
I interpret this to mean that everybody is entitled to one incorrect guess; if the second guess is correct, there are no penalties assessed. Is this accurate? Or is the first incorrect guess an immediate penalty?
Pete – Your interpretation is correct. First guess at the mega-meta is free (no deduction if it is incorrect). It can be used at anytime during the contest.
Pete,
If you started two days earlier it would be on The Day The Music Died.
Are the comments in random chronological order?
There’s a first time for everything, including allowing comments on this page. Seems like the comments are showing up in chron order but there is only one time stamp (the most recent) at the top. Will try to fix…
Hm, maybe there’s a pattern to the comment box timing algorithm.
the time stamp is *NOT* related to the mega-meta lol
Bring it on! But start easy!
